Welcome to Kindergarten!

Kindergarten is the gateway to reading, writing, numerical operations, and social development.  I encourage your participation in all aspects of your child’s education.  One most important step is to check and empty your child’s folder daily, as it will contain important notices, your child’s daily work, and homework.  It is very important to review your child’s work and to discuss the activities of the day, as this reinforces the skills and concepts taught.  Also, your child should complete homework, including reading, with a parent or other responsible adult, as this is a good indicator of how well your child is mastering skills and concepts that are taught.  If you feel there is a problem or concern with your child’s progress, please contact me.

Language Arts

  • Reading:   Students have been reading different information books to learn more about each topic.  Students are familiar with the table of contents, glossary, headings, captions, and diagrams.  Students should be thinking and asking questions as they read across many books about one topic.

  • Wilson:  Students will be introduced to the different lower case letters of the alphabet and will start to hold their pencil correctly.  Students will begin to match the letter symbol to the sound and identify the name of many letters.  Students will also begin to write letters.

  • Writing:  Students have been writing information books about a variety of topics.  Students are including a closing, an opening, diagrams, a different kinds page, and detailed illustrations with labels.  Some ideas for topics; my family, my school, my dog, soccer, pizza, or McDonald's.

Don't forget to READ every night with your child!

  •  Students will be bringing home a variety of stories to read throughout the year.  Please be sure to read the story with your child and give him/her any assistance so that he/she doesn't become frustrated.  It is always a good idea to check to make sure your child understands what he/she has read.

  • We will be working in Rigby leveled reading groups so that your child is being instructed at his/her reading level.

  • Students also read chorally and with a partner on most days with grade level materials.

  • Students also listen and respond to authentic stories during the language arts time.

  • Students are working with 2d shapes and 3d shapes
  • Students are graphing.
  • Students are exploring different kinds of patterns.
